Using Colour Psychology to Get a Better Nights Sleep

The colours you surround yourself with impact your mood, productivity, and sleep much more than you think. For instance, uplifting yellows can put you in a wonderful mood first thing in the morning, while sombre greys can set you up for a miserable day, just like when you look out of your bedroom window and see grey skies.

Colours and sleep

Your bedroom's colours can directly influence your sleep quality, although how they do it is subtle and filled with underlying emotions. Humans associate colours with different parts of nature and form feelings about them through cultural and personal experiences. This is to say that our colour preferences aren't set in stone - they change over time, and that's why we sometimes feel the urge to decorate our bedrooms. 

Sleep is involved because researchers have found that some colours can improve sleep duration and quality. You can use these findings to decorate your bedroom to promote good sleep (although it isn't guaranteed).

Blue, green, yellow, and white are excellent colours for sleep, while red and black are considered the worst. But as we've mentioned, it's about preferences - black could be perfect if you enjoy a dark space. 

A rundown on the best colours for sleep...

Blue

Mimicking the tranquillity of a clear sky or body of water is a sure fire way to make your bedroom calmer. Something as simple as a blue feature wall or blue upholstered bed frame can bring tranquillity to your bedroom.

Green

Green is known for its calmness and happiness, and pastel tones and sages are the perfect choice for most bedrooms. Bright greens, such as lime and spearmint, make ideal accent colours for décor.

Yellow

Sunshine. You can't beat the happy feelings it brings. Throw in some yellow raincoats, sunflowers, lemon sherbets, and other yellow delights, and it’s easy to see why it’s a top choice when decorating your bedroom for better sleep. 

White

White is far more than a base colour - it's a relaxing and calm colour, promoting a sense of peace and relaxation. Your bedroom will benefit from more white elements, and bedding with a cotton bed set is an excellent starting point.

Colour tones and brightness

Even if you choose the colours above for your bedroom renovation, they can adversely impact your sleep if they're too dark or too bright. 

Finding the right balance is critical. Most people find pastel colours best for blue, green, and yellow. Because pastels are subdued, they also allow for reds, oranges, and other warm colours without overpowering your space. 

If you want a darker look in your bedroom, dusky blues, dark greys, and shady greens and browns can also work well.

You can add character and visual interest to your bedroom through textures, or rather, décor and upholsteries that are in an appropriate colour but have depth, such as a knitted blanket for the end of your bed or a woven area rug.
