Finding Time for Yourself as a Busy Parent

**Collaborative Post**

Whilst being a parent is a privilege and children are a wonderful addition to our lives, sometimes we all need a little bit of me time. And needing that "me time" doesn't make you any less of a parent, all of us need time to ourselves sometimes even if it's just to enjoy a bath in peace or a few hours of uninterrupted sleep! Parenting can be exhausting, and you need to focus on both your physical and mental health, and your significant others as well so you can be the best parents you possibly can be.

Also, as your child gets older, they will have to learn about the importance of self care as well. Showing them that you’re human and need a bit of time to yourself as well is showing them about self love and that it is ok to put yourself first sometimes, it doesn’t mean you love them any less. This gives them the tools they need to communicate when they need a bit of time as well and value their own worth, health, and self.

Babysitters

While it is possible to time your self care breaks for when your children are otherwise engaged, sometimes you need a bit more time to yourself. Whether you’re planning a weekend away or something in the evening, the most responsible solution is to find a babysitter. This also means you’re less anxious about leaving your child alone and, depending on where you live, it might be a legal necessity.

Friends and family members might be able to help with this. Make sure you ask well in advance and make sure you’re aware they’re doing you a favour. Some people love looking after children, while others might not take it as naturally. Make sure you talk about rules and boundaries, so your children have consistency.

Another option is to hire a babysitter. You might be worried about finding a responsible and registered babysitter, but looking for experience and qualifications can be a good way to make sure you can trust whoever is looking after your kids. Make sure you meet them in advance and, if possible, that they meet your children.

Date Nights

If you manage to get a babysitter, you have the perfect opportunity to set up a date night with your significant other. When you become a parent, it can feel as though your relationship takes a back step. Or, if you’re a single parent, you might worry about your romantic and social life.

This gives you an opportunity to work on your relationships without your children being there. You can talk about what you like and all you have to worry about is making it home before the babysitter needs to go.

Date nights make sure that you continue to make an effort and appreciate each other even when you’re parents. It can keep your relationship strong.

Quick Breaks Through the Day

Sometimes you can snatch a few minutes in the day to yourself. Take advantage of these. Even fifteen minutes or so of relaxation can be restorative enough to keep you going.

So get yourself a hot drink of choice, whether it’s coffee, hot chocolate, or some kind of tea, and make yourself sit down and enjoy it.

Rather than sitting on social media the whole time, consider other ways to keep yourself occupied. Crossword puzzles are a great diversion and they keep your mind sharp. Another option is to write or draw. You can do a quick sketch or poem in a few minutes, or you can write in your journal. The important thing is that this is your time.

Spa Days

There’s a reason why spa days are the classic and quintessential way to relax. It works. Whether your idea of a spa day involves a nice bath with music and candles or you prefer the full works, including hot tubs, saunas, spas, and massages, the most important thing is that you feel relaxed and pampered.

This can make the knots in your muscles melt away, along with all of your worries and concerns.

Different treatments come with different costs, with a bath at home being the budget (but no less relaxing) option. Sometimes a day can be exactly what you need to restore yourself and give yourself a proper treat.

Exercise and Walks

On another note, exercise can be a surprisingly good self care routine. While it doesn’t seem relaxing, working out is good for your physical and mental health. You will even feel more energised in your day-to-day life.

Find an exercise you enjoy. Walking is a great option because it’s great for your cardiovascular system and it gets you out in nature, which is beneficial in its own right. Otherwise, you can find a sports team and play with other people who have similar interests and make friends. Socialising with other adults is a great way to boost your mental health and combat loneliness.
