If you’re one of the many people in the UK easing into working from home life this year, you’ll know how tricky it can be to keep your home and work separate from one another. As well as getting used to the changes being made to your working life, it can be very stressful trying to balance the budgets, especially as we get into the winter months.
Luckily, making a few changes to your daily life can make a huge difference to both your comfort levels while you have to work from home, and your bank balance too. Here are some tips for cutting your energy bills this winter.
Make the Most of Natural Light
As we get further into the winter months and the temperature begins to drop, the days when the sun shines feel like more and more of a treat. As well as giving your mood a boost - sunlight can up your serotonin levels, helping you sleep better and feel more relaxed - sunny days can be used to your bank balance’s advantage. Positioning your work from home desk by a window that gets a lot of natural light will help you cut down on the amount of time you spend with both lamps and the heating on, as the sun will keep you feeling warm instead.
Switch on the Heating Only When You Need to
A common misconception when it comes to your heating is that it’s cheaper to have your heating on at a lower temperature for longer. However, experts agree that the best way to save money on your heating bill is to make use of a thermostat. With fitted analogue timers, Heatline boilers give you full control over how long your radiators are running for, making for efficient heating that helps you keep your bills low and your family warm.
As mentioned by Heatable.co.uk your boiler’s over ten years old, or you feel as if your radiators are taking a long time to heat up, the most effective way to cut down on your energy bills in the long run, is to start looking for new boiler deals and invest in a new boiler. Offering an easy to use tool to help you find the most energy-efficient boiler for your home, BOXT make it quick and simple to install a new heating system that won’t see your energy bills go sky high this winter.
Consider a Room Rearrange
Are your sofas, armchairs or cabinets blocking your radiators? Especially if you have high ceilings or bigger rooms, leaving furniture in front of your radiators won’t let the heat circulate, so you’ll find your energy bills rising, without getting the cosy and warm feeling you expect. To stop this from happening, make sure your work from home setup leaves plenty of room for your radiators to heat your entire space effectively.
Refreshing your interiors by rearranging your space also gives you the chance to spring clean just before winter really gets going. Investing in accessories like fluffy rugs will help make your space more comfortable, as well as stopping your feet from getting cold. It can be difficult to change things around at home when the nights draw in, so moving your furniture now will help you both stay warm, and give your home a whole new lease of life for the winter months to come.
Hunt Out the Draughts
They’re easy to ignore in the summer months, but when it starts to get frosty outside, draughts in your home can quickly make your radiators feel non-existent. Investing in a couple of cheap draught excluders, keeping the doors shut while you work from home, and checking your windows are sealed properly will stop the warm air leaving your space. This means you’ll feel the benefit of your central heating for longer, without the need to leave your radiators on all day long.
Ensure You Are Getting the Best Deal
Keep the (Hot) Drinks Flowing
Last but not least, one of the easiest ways to keep warm while you work from home is to have a steady supply of tea on the go. Hot drinks increase your body temperature, while holding a warm mug can make you feel warmer too, helping you resist the urge to pop the heating on for another hour. This is also important when it comes to your concentration. One of the biggest adjustments to make when working from home is blocking out distractions, which is easier said than done when you have kids playing in the next room. Staying hydrated with warm drinks to hand aids your concentration levels, making you more able to focus and quickly tick off your to-do list.
Of course as winter approaches it is also going to be beneficial to hunt out your thermal underlayers, chunky knits and extra layers as a cost free way to keep a little warmer (and probably feel a little more snuggly in the process too). As soon as the colder months come round I always dig out my ladies slipper boots to keep my toes warm when say at the table working!
