Busy families often mean busy homes and with busy homes comes the need for plenty of storage and lots of organisation to help the family home run smoothly. From under bed storage to tidy away the clutter to shelves, racking and toy boxes they all help keep a family home look tidy and everything running smoothly.
Whilst Spring might not have quite sprung yet, after a pretty hectic Christmas I have already made a start on my spring cleaning in the hope I can get some organisation back into our home now everyone is back to work and school. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting my home to look like a show home. In fact, I am very proud of the fact that this is a family home and it is full of love, happiness and memories. But I don't need to be reminded of those moments by tripping over LEGO scattered on the floor or by having to trudge through a sea of books and toys to get the kids to bed at night!
I want our home to feel like a place the kids can relax, play and where everyone feels at home. But at the same time, I want some organisation, some tidiness and that means finding plenty of storage solutions that work for the whole family.
When it comes to storage, I always find myself heading back to one place... IKEA! After all they are a one stop shop for all thing’s storage, organisation and home (plus who doesn't love the meatballs!?). But in all seriousness, whenever I have a storage crisis or find myself having a bit of a spring clean, I can always find a storage solution in IKEA.
Now I am sure the majority of parents will nod in agreement when I say that kids bring home SO much paperwork once they start school. From important letters, reply slips, party invites and homework to name a few. And I am sure most parents will also agree when I say that it doesn't matter how important the teacher tells your child this letter/info might be, they will most likely forget to hand it to you and it will end up in a crumpled heap at the bottom of their bag for days, even weeks! That or strewn across the kitchen side or dining room table.
So I wanted to get something that could help us all get a bit better at being organised with our important information, letters and homework etc and the IKEA SKADIS pegboard has been the perfect solution. The SKADIS pegboard comes in a variety of sizes and once you have found the size you like, you can then buy the fixtures and fitting separately to ensure the pegboard works perfectly for you and your family’s needs.
In terms of attachments we opted for two letter holders, two containers, a set of elastic cords (3 in a pack) and a shelf. After a few days of reminders to put things on the board it has really helped and everyone, even the kids are on board with how much easier it makes things run. They each have their own letter hook to place any letters, forms or reply slips that I need to see in. Then I check it every day and fill out any I need to before returning them to their bags for the following day.
I have been using the shelf to place any change they might need to take for things such as tuck money and non-uniform days. I just ensure there is always a little bit of change on the shelf, so I don't have to go rummaging through my bag at the last minute on those days.
The cords have helped us store party invites so not only are they in a safe place but since they are out on display we can easily see them to remind ourselves of the date/time and make sure we have a present ready to go for the day, no more last minute dashes to the shops for us!
Another big job on my to do list was to create a reading wall for the kids. They both love to read but sometimes a bookshelf full of books can look messy and be an overwhelming choice for kids to choose from at bedtime. The FLISAT wall storage shelf seemed like the perfect solution and can be used in many different ways.
We used two FLISAT wall storage shelves to create a book storage space right next to their bed which not only holds their books but their drinks, eye masks and any other bits and pieces they need. The shelf itself comes in a light wood colour which is lovely but also makes it really easy to paint yourself too, tying it in to any décor or colourway you might already have.
Since most of the kid’s furniture, including their beds are white, we opted to paint ours in a gloss white to tie them into the room. We then placed them on the wall at the perfect height for the kids to be able to reach both in and out of bed. They then chose a small selection of books for their own shelves. The perfect thing is we can then choose new books each week to keep their reading material fresh, new and interesting.
The FLISAT storage is really sturdy and the bar at the front stops anything from slipping or sliding off. As you can see the kids have all different sized books in there and they all fit really well without falling or toppling off. Plus, since the storage is attached to the wall it can be placed anywhere in the room (James is asking for another shelf high up for his LEGO models so his sister can't reach them!). It also means that as they are on the wall it frees up the floor space for even more storage or just extra playing room for the kids.
Do you think any of the idea's above would help combat storage in your home? Or do you have any handy storage/organisational tips to share? I would love to hear them in the comments below!
xXx
