Choosing the Right Flooring for Your Home

**Advertisement Feature**

Deciding on the type of flooring is hard enough, so when you have to then decide on colour things get even harder! If you’ve opted for real wood, then you’ll want to get the colour and wood type right since you’re splashing a lot of your hard-earned cash on it. The competition between light and dark wood is difficult and can create two completely different looks, so which ever one you decide to go for you’ll need to be sure it complements your interior.

However, don’t think you have to go for either something really light or really dark. There are plenty of middle shades available for those who don’t want anything too extreme. So, let’s have a look…

Light floors

Although you might associate light floors with being versatile and neutral and chosen to go with your décor without complaint, you can actually make a pretty interesting statement with a lighter wood. Light floors are perfect at offering a subtle back drop to enhance the look of your furniture, as well as offering a fresh, bright feel to your room. Lighter décor opens up the room, allowing it to feel more spacious, as well as being easy to pair with many different colours.

One of the most interesting features of lighter wood is that it suits many different décor themes. If you’re after a clean-cut contemporary appearance, then perhaps a whitewashed wood with little imperfections is more suitable. However, if a rustic décor is more to your taste, then a lighter wood shows off imperfections such as grains and knots better than a darker wood might.

If you have opted for a lighter wood above a darker one, then it is worth considering it from a practical point of view too. They tend to show the dirt more than a darker flooring would, so be aware of this when you’re choosing. However, if this is something that you’re prepared for, then don’t be afraid to go as light as you like - whites are very in at the moment!

Dark wood

If you’re wanting to go down the route of making a real statement, then there’s no better option than dark floors. We all know that they add tremendous sophistication, class and luxury to any home, but this doesn’t mean they don’t come with their own sense of fun! It’s a common misconception that dark floorings aren’t as versatile as lighter ones, when surprisingly they pair well with bright colours which can really make the floor pop! If you’re someone who enjoys a room with lots of contrast and richness, then dark flooring is certainly a great route to go down.

From a practical point of view, a darker flooring is naturally better at hiding dirt, stains and scratches, thus making it a more carefree choice and easier cleaning routine, more suitable for households with children and pets.

Of course, the final decision is up to you. It might be that you’re dead set on what colour, but if you’re between ideas then it’s definitely worth doing your research and deciding on what features are most important to you. Then you’ve got the question of which finish to go for, so take one step at a time!

Do you have wood flooring in your home? How did you decide what to go for?

  1. I'd love to add wooden flooring in our hallway. A high traffic area that I find myself vacuuming all the time to help keep clean.

  2. I have carpet throughout my house the moment (with the exception of the kitchen and bathroom) because it was the cheapest option when I moved in.

I LOVE wooden floors though. When I move into my 'forever' home, I'm planning on having wooden floors throughout!

  3. Flooring is such an important thing to think about within your home isn't it? We have vinyl everywhere at the moment and it actually works well I would love to have wood though.

Wood flooring is so beautiful. Unfortunately, we don't have it in our home. If we do have a budget for it, I would do a home renovation and change our floors and choose dark wood flooring. It gives such a cozy feel to any home.

  7. Wood flooring can really make a room look wonderful. We chose quite a natural dark look and it works well with the decor. But I really like the chalked washed look. Such a good choice when you have pets, we've found it much easier to clean than carpets.

  8. We have wood throughout eccept for the kitchen and bath. It was here when we moved in. I love the warmth of the color of a nice medium oak or similar wood.

  9. We go have wood flooring. It was there when we got there so we didn’t need to make the choice. I always thought carpets were better but the wooden floor definitely makes the room feel more modern right? Love the dark one on this post
