Space is pretty amazing right? I often find myself gazing up at the night sky, at the beauty of the stars and at the glow of the moon taking in its mysterious beauty. But have you ever wondered what it would really be like travelling into space and rather than gazing up at the moon, standing on it staring straight back at Earth!?
A pretty amazing thought, right? Which made me think what would life really be like as an astronaut and does my day to day life have any comparisons with that of an astronaut?
One thing I am sure I can relate to is the lack of sleep. Sleep is so important for both astronauts and us mums! We need to be in peak condition and health to tackle the tasks ahead and that starts with a good night's sleep. Of course to get a good nights sleep we have to be comfortable and a good mattress and pillow can make all the difference.
You may have heard of TEMPUR® for producing some of the most comfortable pillows and mattresses around but did you know that TEMPUR® was first created by Nasa in the 1970's to cushion astronauts during lift-off as they journeyed into space. Now of course TEMPUR® material is used to make mattresses and pillows that evenly distribute weight and pressure, ensuring a comfortable night’s sleep.
TEMPUR® material lies at the core of all of their mattresses and pillows and is still the only mattress product recognised by NASA and certified by the Space Foundation. Now you just can't argue with that right? I mean if it's good enough for astronauts then it's got to be good enough for us parents who are desperately seeking a good night's sleep.
Astronauts have to keep to a tight schedule to ensure they stay on track of course. Since the International Space Station orbits earth roughly every 92 minutes it's really important that astronauts have a sleep schedule in play to ensure they get enough sleep. Did you know every 24 hours astronauts will see the sun rise and set around 16 times, which means they cant exactly rely on knowing when it's time to sleep by the sun setting.
They also have to deal with zero gravity and so astronauts often either strap themselves in to sleep or sleep in sleep bags attached to the walls to make sure they don't float away when they are resting and sleeping. They also use eye masks and shutters to cut out as much light as possible when trying to sleep. Evelyn is easily woken, especially by the sunrise (which we definitely found out camping last summer with the 5am wake up calls!) and a black out blind is a saviour in the summer to give us all a few more hours sleep!
After a camping trip last summer (and another few planned for this summer!) another thing I can kind of relate to is eating in space. Just like when you go camping and you have to ensure you have plenty of food with you and a way to cook it all. It also needs to be food that doesn't perish easily and can be stored with minimum hassle or leakages, which is fairly similar to an astronaut when in space.
As on Earth, space food comes in disposable packages. Astronauts must throw their packages away when they have finished eating. Some packaging actually prevents food from flying away. The food packaging is designed to be flexible and easier to use, as well as to maximise space when stowing or disposing of food containers. Astronauts have access to an oven to heat food on board but no fridge!
An astronaut can choose from many types of foods such as fruits, nuts, peanut butter, chicken, beef, seafood, candy, brownies, etc. Available drinks include coffee, tea, orange juice, fruit punches and lemonade. I'm pretty sure both James and Evelyn would be impressed with the selection of food and drinks available and im not going to lie, so would I!
Astronauts even have access to condiments such as mayonnaise and ketchup, which would please James for sure because he seems to eat his own weight in ketchup with his meals! They also have salt and pepper, although these come in liquid form to stop the small particles floating away and blocking air vents etc.
My feet will of course be staying firmly on Earth, running around after my crazy children, seeking out that much needed good night's sleep and of course gazing up at the stars wondering just what it would be like to be amongst them.
It would be pretty awesome to experience zero gravity and look at the earth from above though right?
xXx

This was so interesting! I love Tempur mattresses, we've just got one and it's incredible!
ReplyDeleteI know the feeling of sticking to a tight schedule! I'd absolutely love to go into space and just see what it feels like x
ReplyDeleteLove this post. Experience zero gravity would be amazing 😉
ReplyDeleteI have heard only good things about Tempur mattresses and think sleep is so important and can only imagine the importance of it for astronauts.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great post, being in space sounds interesting but I’m not sure I’d actually like to go myself
ReplyDeleteLoved this post. I actually wanted to an astronaut when I was younger. I have a telescope so I often look at the night sky x
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that Tempur started out in this way - wow! Well, they must know a thing or two about mattresses, that's for sure!
ReplyDeleteI would love to go into space hehe - I guess this is the closest I'll get to it ;) x
ReplyDeleteSpace travel really is fascinating, and so interesting to read about. Not sure I could deal with the way of space life though!
ReplyDeleteI'd definitely agree with the lack of sleep thing, I can definitely relate to that haha!
ReplyDeleteThis was such an interesting post! I’ve always found space so fascinating! I don’t think I’d be able to handle actually living in space - I think I would get too homesick!
ReplyDeleteI think that mattresses are something worth spending more money on!
ReplyDeleteThat's so amazing! My kids would love the idea that astronauts use their mattresses!
ReplyDeleteGrowing up in the 70s,the "big" thing regarding astronauts was drinking TANG which was used by NASA as well. Now as I get older a new pillow by TEMPUR does sound more appealing to me.
ReplyDeleteThis is really interesting, I had no idea about this and mattresses. I would love a tempur mattress
ReplyDeleteSuch an interesting read, I had no idea that astronauts on the space station saw the sun rise and set that many times. Tempur mattresses look amazing and so many positive comments on how good they are- think I shall have to invest!
ReplyDeleteYes I do imagine sometimes on what it’s like to being in outer space. I agree that Moms like us really need a good night sleep. That mattress sounds awesome!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this post - I find space fascinating. I would love to try a Tempur mattress, they sound amazing. Kaz
ReplyDeleteI think the weightlessness of space would be the most appealing to have that feeling of flying would be incredible. But I would happily settle for a great nights sleep on a new mattress right now.
ReplyDeleteI never knew or would of guessed that Tempur was developed by Nasa!! Would never have thought I'd have anything in common with an Astronaut although I would love to go up to space
ReplyDeleteLaura x
This is so interesting, I love space themed posts. I went to the Space centre NASA while in the US and it was amazing for sure xx
ReplyDeleteI would be way to scared of something going wrong while I was in space to be an astronaut, but I think they do an amazing job. It must be so demanding for them!
ReplyDeleteLouise x
What a great piece . My girls are fascinated by space
ReplyDeleteThis is so interesting! I would love to go to space. I definitely want to try a Tempur mattress now!
ReplyDeleteI would love experience zero gravity! I've heard really good things about tempur mattresses, we have the pillows and they are brilliant!
ReplyDeleteI have some Tempur memory foam pillows on my birthday wish list! My current one seems to give me neck problems :(
ReplyDeleteTempur mattresses always sound pretty amazing. It is interesting to know some of the things that go in space, good to know they still get ketchup.
ReplyDeletePart of me would absolutely LOVE to go to space, but having visited the NASA space station in America I know I would fail all of the tests prior to lift off! I had no idea that Tempur made the pillows that went up to space - that's amazing :)
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine what liquid salt and pepper would taste like?! This is so interesting, I definitely couldn't be an astronaut but I think their job is brilliant. Love the Tempur connection, it's so interesting
ReplyDeleteI would love to experience space but not for any length of time
ReplyDeleteI've never really thought of how life can compare to an astronaut, but sleep is so very important no matter what job you do.
ReplyDeleteThe children definitely keep me on my toes and a daily good night sleep is the only way I can cope! Pillows and quality mattresses matter a lot!
ReplyDeleteI have always been a fan of space but I'm not sure how I would have dealt with liquidized food! haha! Either way, sleep {astronaut or not!} is massively important!
ReplyDeleteNo I didn’t know that TEMPUR® was first created by NASA. Thanks for that little trivia. This sounds really comfy to use.
