Halloween Snacks - Marshmallow Broomsticks! **GUEST POST**

* Guest Post*

I'm a fairly creative person. I mean, aside from blogging, I love baking and crafts and all that kind of stuff. I've been waiting for the twins to be big enough to enjoy baking with me. They're still a bit little for anything more than stirring and decorating. But I thought that making some simple no-bake Halloween treats to share with you all would be fairly simple.

Oh, how wrong I was...

I was scrolling through Pinterest for inspiration and saw all kinds of brilliant photos of broomsticks made out of everything from cheese, to chocolate, to cupcakes, to popcorn. And... marshmallows!
I decided to do my own take on these. I stocked up on Mint Matchmakers, marshmallows, chocolate and sprinkles and I set the twins up at the dining table. I had images of the three of us enjoying a lovely afternoon, making some delicious marshmallow broomsticks, which would obviously look just as amazing as all those photos on Pinterest.

It all started well enough. I melted the chocolate, got everything set up and put it all in front of the twins.

Step One

We started by poking the Mint Matchmakers into the tops of the marshmallows.

This bit actually went fairly well! The twins loved it! I pre-poked holes in the marshmallows for them, so it was an easy job and they got to eat any Matchmakers that got broken in the process. In hindsight, I probably should have stopped here. The Matchmakers even look look a little bit like broomsticks, right? Job done.
But I didn't stop there.

Step Two (and three)

Next, we dipped the marshmallows into the melted chocolate and then into the sprinkles. Jack really enjoyed this bit, although there was more chocolate on his face (and my table) than there was on the marshmallows.

This is where it started to go wrong.
Jack decided he just wanted to eat everything... And Alice decided she didn't like marshmallows, but Matchmakers dipped in chocolate and sprinkles are quite nice...

This really isn't how I expected these to turn out.  I was expecting a Pinterest-worthy masterpiece, but what I ended up with was absolutely not Pinterest-worthy. I don't think they'd help any witches fly, either.

I think the biggest problem was that my children take after me and just can't resist chocolate. What was I thinking, putting all these yummy treats in front of them? Of course, they weren't going to turn them into marshmallow broomsticks. They're two years old! Out of an entire box of Matchmakers and a bag of marshmallows, I ended up with three almost passable broomsticks

And these 6 really delicious Halloween chocolates!

To make these, I simply wrestled a bowl of melted chocolate and a tub of sprinkles away from two angry toddlers on a sugar high. Then I resisted the urge to eat the melted chocolate with a spoon and, instead, poured it into a silicone cupcake tray. Then I poured the sprinkles on top and popped them in the fridge to set.

Of course, then I had to resist eating all six of them in one go. And clean chocolate off my children.
If you want my advice, stick to the Halloween chocolate disks. You can even skip the toddler wrestling step. I don't think it's crucial to the end result. Or... just eat a bar of Dairy Milk while wearing a witch’s hat. Much less stressful!
